Brazil 2014 World Cup and Ajasin Varsity effort.

Weeks before the commencement of the FIFA 2014 World Cup holding in Brazil, students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko were anticipating on where they could watch the tournament, which kicked off on the 12th of June. Their anticipation, according to investigation was due largely to the financial implication as well as differences in the time zone of the host country and ours in Nigeria. Unexpectedly, succor came their way when the varsity management with the robust relationship between it and the current Student Union Government, decided to show the matches live at the school's Relaxation Centre. This kind gesture could not have been best appreciated than this time considering the financial implication of watching every match at commercial viewing centers in the university town for students. Moreover, the pathetic nature of electricity in Akungba would have dealt a heavy blow for the students to watch the tournament at their individual villa, even if any of them could boast of having a television set. Security wise, watching the tournament outside the school might have put the lives of the students at risk, going by the abysmal security situation in the country, especially now that the dreaded Islamic sect, BokoHaram is spreading the tentacles of its bombings to viewing centers in some parts of the country. At times, most of the matches end by 12-1 am. Apart from overcrowding often witness at viewing centers in the town, many students might, at the viewing centers , engage in an unnecessary argument which might invariably degenerate into a free-for-all. Most importantly, a match is watched at #70 in the town. Mathematically, #70 multiply by the number of matches is a huge amount of many that the students can easily use to photocopy reading materials or have it saved for dry season. And for the university management to have shown the tournament, not minding the financial burden it might cause it has, indeed demonstrated that it is not only prioritizing the academic needs of the students, but also their social needs. This is, indeed, a welcome development worthy of commendation! It needs no praise singing that the varsity leadership has done what the students cannot forget in a hurry. We equally commend the student union executives who, through their dialogue with the management facilitate this gesture. We, however, want this kind gesture to continues because a university on a 21st century journey must not shy away from being responsive to the social needs of members of its community.....
