A plane crash on Friday night in Kentucky left four people dead and a 7-year-old girl injured, state police said.

The girl walked away from the wreckage and reported the incident to a local resident, who called 911, Sgt. Dean Patterson of the Kentucky State Police said.

"This girl came out of the wreckage herself and found the closest residence and reported the plane crash," Patterson said. "It's a miracle in a sense that she survived it, but it's tragic that four others didn't."

The girl was rushed to a hospital and her condition was stable with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Piper PA-34 had taken off from Key West, Florida, for Mount Vernon, Illinois, and was flying over the southwestern part of Kentucky when it crashed.

At about 5:55 p.m. CST, it reported an engine malfunction and lost contact afterwards, the FAA said.

Police have found the wreckage in a heavily wooded area near Kentucky Lake, which is a popular tourist attraction in the state.

Four bodies, including the pilot and three passengers were found, authorities said.
