Parents have been challenged to pay attention to the proper upbringing of their children and teach them sex education in order to reduce the incidence of child rape in the country.
Wife of the PDP governorship candidate in Ondo state, Mrs Eno Jegede threw the challenge on Tuesday while delivering a lecture at this month edition of Gbebiro meeting in ore, the headquarters of Odigbo local govt area of Ondo state.
Delivering a lecture titled: 'Women: A reliable pillar in nation building', Mrs Jegede extensively examined the growing incident of child rape in the country.
She lamented that the menace has become a serious concern to all stakeholders with its debilitating effect on the life of the girl child and its overall consequence on the country.
She however blamed parents for neglecting their parental roles adding that most of them have also failed to create an ambience of friendliness with their wards.
The wife of the PDP governorship flag bear therefore tasked parents to teach their children the way of the lord which she said would prevent them from being lured into vices. She also urged parents to monitor the movement of their children and their dresses.
The guest lecturer equally called on all stakeholders to rise up to the task of protecting the girl child in order to save the country from destruction.
The event featured free medical screening which afforded the women to know their health and Hiv status as some of the beneficiaries lauded the gesture.
The October edition of Gbebiro meeting coincided with this year's International Day of the Girl Child, a day set aside by the United Nations Organization to identify the challenges facing the girl child with a view to designing formidable solutions to their most pressing problems.
