Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has shrugged off criticism from his wife about his leadership style by saying 'she belongs to my kitchen'.
The country's first lady, Aisha Buhari has openly questioned her husband's work and said she may not support him if he runs again unless he shakes up his government.
Instead of taking offence, Mr Buhari laughed it off and said: "I don't know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room."
He made the comments to reporters in Germany, with Chancellor Angela Merkel standing by his side, who glared at him at first and then laughed.
Seventy-three year-old Mr Buhari said he hopes his wife remembers he was elected in his fourth run at the presidency last year.
"So I claim superior knowledge over her and the rest of the opposition, because in the end I have succeeded," he said.
"It's not easy to satisfy the whole Nigerian opposition parties or to participate in the government."
Mr Buhari, who was briefly a military dictator in the 1980s, took over from Goodluck Jonathan last year.
Since then he has campaigned on promises to crack down on corruption and turn the tide against Boko Haram.
On Thursday, his government announced the first negotiated release of 21 of 218 Chibok schoolgirlskidnapped by the Islamist group in 2014.
Mr Buhair said Nigeria would continue working to free the remaining girls.
He also said his government was continuing to fight to combat major economic, security and corruption problems it inherited.
Mr Buhair has not said whether he will stand again in 2019.
