Kingmakers threaten to banish deposed Ondo monarch

The crisis rocking Mahin Kingdom in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State took a turn for the worse as traditional kingmakers threatened to banish the deposed monarch of the town, Amapetu of Mahin, Oba Lawrence Omowole, from the community.

The kingmakers, including Urayen Ogefun of Mahinland, Chief Akinyemi Omoyele; the Asaron, Chief Roju Malumi; the Jadigba, Olibamayo Aladetan and the Yasere, Chief Godwin Balogun, had earlier deposed the first class monarch for allegedly ceding of the community to a non-indigene.

However, the monarch accused his opponents of committing sacrilege by pronouncing his removal as a traditional ruler, describing his dethronement as a “clear breach of the customs, traditions, due process and statutory procedures”.

But the kingmakers at a meeting held at the instance of the family of the embattled monarch said their decision stands until the embattled monarch rescind his decision of ceding Aboto; which they called Mahinland to a nonindigene.

The meeting with the kingmakers, which had in attendance the Odede of Igbo Egunrin, Oba Phillips Kalejaiye; the Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidioma and the Molokun of Atijere, Oba Adeoye Edema failed to resolve the dispute amicably.

The communiqué made available to reporters at the outcome of the meeting said the monarch having been impeached in accordance with Mahin traditions ceased to enjoy the rights and privileges of the throne and shall henceforth be treated as persona non grata.
