Ondo to have modern archive centre--Akeredolu

The governor of Ondo state, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Thursday restated his government commitment to put in place globally competitive archive centre in the state.

Governor Akeredolu gave the commitment at a one-day capacity building programme for top government officials and record officers in the state held at the Public Service Training Institute, Ilaramokin.

Represented by his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, Arakunrin Akeredolu noted that “in line with global practice, a state or government is expected to have a repository where operational foundation documents of government, archival records such as minutes, resolutions and ordinances that firm the legal basis for the government’s very existence”.

The governor admitted that an efficient archives and proper record management helps to preserve and document government's records and heritage with a view to making them available for judicial, historical and research purposes especially promoting good governance.

He said: “A state archive is a potent way of promoting government accountability ànd good governance particularly in our nascent democracy.

“It is on this note that the present government has made a resolute commitment to put everything in place to ensure that we have a modern and efficient archives centre in place starting with a budgetary provision of N10 million and the approval for this sensitization and training programme which is holding today as a take-off point”

In his opening address, the commissioner for Information and Orientation, Yemi Olowolabi said the programme was to sensitize all stakeholders on proper record management.

The event featured a lecture titled, Record archives for good governance in ondo state by Prof. Bunmi Alegbeleye.
