My wife is a thief, husband tells court

/A 45-year old businessman, Livinus Uwa has requested a Lagos Customary Court sitting in Igando to dissolve his four year old marriage with his wife, Chinese on the account that she is lazy, uncaring, disrespectful and a thief.

Uwa who said he was tired of the relationship begged the court not to wait any longer for her wife to state her own side of the case because she would not come since she had no defence to make.

The presiding chairman of the customary court had issued court summons to compel Chinese’s appearance in court but she had refused to show up.

In his evidence in chief before the court, Uwa narrated what he had gone through in the hands of the wife in the last four years and why he wanted divorce.

His words: “My wife is a thief, on severally occasions, she stole my money from my wardrobe, rendering me broke.

“I married a thief …the last time she burgled my room and stole N350, 000. I reported the theft at the police station and she confessed to the theft, but the money was not recovered,’’ he said.

Uwa said his estranged wife, Chineye, had a daughter for him in the four-year-old marriage.

Continuing, he said “Since we got married, my wife has always been appearing and disappearing.

“When she was pregnant, she left the house to an unknown place and came back after she was delivered of the baby.

“She abandoned our baby when she was 10 months old; I have to engage a baby sitter to take care of her.

“When the baby was two years old, I enrolled her in school and my wife reappeared,” he said.

Uwa also described his wife as a lazy and dirty woman.

He told the court: “Chineye is lazy, she cannot cook, wash or sweep, I do the house chores.

“I have reported all her attitudes and stealing habits to both families, they called her but she refused to change.”

Uwa pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage, saying “I am no longer in love’’.

“Please, dissolve this marriage, I can no longer condone her stealing habits.”

The court’s President, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case to September 20 for judgment.
