ICT will not lead to job loss in Ondo state, says SITA boss, Akinkugbe

By Sola Obagbemisoye

The intention of Ondo state government to automate all its processes is to save time, conserve energy, money and create more job opportunities for the army of unemployed youth.

SSA to the Governor on ICT & Coordinator of the State Information Technology Agency, (SITA) Mr Olumbe Akinkugbe who allayed this fear while speaking on the attendant benefits of Information & Communication Technology said, the use of ICT has not only brought relief to mankind but enhanced efficiency, productivity & service deliveries.

He explained that the agenda of govt is to speed up processes at work place with a view to expanding & widening job scope & interface with more members of the public at minimal cost.

Explaining further, "govt is not talking about Robots replacing workers at their duty posts rather, the thinking of govt is how do we do our work quicker, increase the level of productivity & how does efficiency of one department will lead to improved output of others." he said.

So, ICT to the present administration is about collaboration, it is about increasing synergy & cooperation within a system to create more space for others.

According to Akinkugbe, the time wasted in carrying a file from one point to another for approval will be totally eliminated therefore reducing time &  cost while the officer in charge of such assignment  will redirect his energy to other productive ventures.

In a technologically driven society, people usually talk about working smart & not working hard. This is because the focus is not on how many files piled up on a table or carried home by a dutiful officer but how many of such file he can treat within the  allotted time.

He concluded that the time is now for public officials to embrace ICT to serve the people better through Strategic action.
