The Deji of Akure kingdom, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, Odundun the second has called on well-meaning individuals, groups, corporate bodies as well as charitable organizations to rise up to the challenge of improving the welfare of prison inmates in the country.
The monarch made the call on Thursday during a visit to the Medium Security Prison, Olokuta in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
Oba Aladetoyinbo who was accompanied by six high chiefs was conducted round the facility by the Controller of Prisons, ondo state, Command, Amadin osayande and top officers of the command before retiring to their hall for a brief meeting.
The Akure monarch said the purpose of confining people in Prisons is for reformation and rehabilitation before being re integrated into the society after completing their various jail terms.
Predicting his claim on his observation of the facility, the traditional ruler maintained that prisons have failed in their mandate of reforming inmates considering the bad conditions that prisoners are made to live with.
He empathized that such discouraging situation in the nation's prisons would only help in breeding harden criminals rather than making them new creature.
While hailing prison officials for doing their best despite the numerous challenges they are battling with, Oba Aladetoyinbo encouraged the inmates to the see their confinement as way of reforming themselves to be better and responsible citizens after their release.
The monarch who was told that majority of the inmates are awaiting trials and have spent various number of years in the prison promised to network with the chief Judge of the state to find a way of speeding up their trials.
He equally promise to encourage his subjects, politicians, business men, public-spirited individuals and other stakeholders to contribute their quota in making life more bearable for them.
Earlier, the Controller of Prisons, Ondo state Command, Amadin Osayande praised the Monarch for identifying with the inmates not minding his status in the society even as he intimated him to some of the challenges facing them.
He listed lack of pipe-borne water and functional vehicles to convey prisoners to courts when the need arises as some of the challenges, aside the fact that majority of the 863 inmates in the facility are awaiting trials.
Osayande who noted that government alone cannot solve all the identifies problems therefore appealed to the monarch to use his influence in the society to gather support in addressing some of the challenges.
