In a new society one finds oneself, one is a stranger with a sheer ignorance of the norms and the existing laws of such a society. It is, therefore, incumbent on authorities of such a society to expose such a stranger to the acceptable ways of behaving with a view to integrating well without running foul of the laws of the land. This, perhaps, informed the 3-day orientation programme organised by the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko for the fresh students it admitted for the 2013/2014 academic session. The programme was to inform, educate and enlighten the freshers on the modus operandi of the university, thus exposing them to the acceptable way of behaving in the ivory tower. The event commenced last Monday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Mulipurpose Hall. The freshers thronged the venue of the event in their thousands wanting to know the dos and don't of the university. On the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Femi Mimiko congratulated them on their hard-earned admission. Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, the Vice Chancellor warned the freshers against indulging in examination malpractices, cultism, indecent dressing, rape, theft ,and any form of violence. He said the university had a formidable disciplinary machinery, adding that any student tried and convicted of any act of indiscipline would be shown the way out of the institution. "In your own interest, be law-abiding and be obedient to the rules and regulations of the university", he urged. He, however, advised them to imbibe the culture of hard work and excellence, promising that his management was making frantic effort to further make the school conducive for teaching and learning. It would be recalled that prof Mimiko is currently on a national assignment in Abuja. Also speaking, a former dean of the faculty of law, Mr Tajudeen Ibrahim said AAUA like every other saner institution had relevant laws guiding every member of the university community. He, therefore, advised them to always act within the purview of the rules and regulations of the institution. The Acting Director, Health Services in the institution, Dr (Mrs) Grace Ajayi said the freshers were lucky to be admitted at a time the university relocated its health centre from Ikare to the university campus. She warned them against self-medication and patronage of quacks; "rather, patronise the universities health centre for good health care services". The ceremony also featured lectures on ATM and e-tranzaction, sports, students and the host community, library uses, moral ethics, security, fire outbreak among others on the first and second day of the event. One of the most exciting moments of the programme was when the freshers were taught the university anthem. Intoxicated by the melody of the anthem, the students clapped and shouted uncontrollably. Some of the freshers spoke to CAMPUSLIFE. Akanni Peter admitted into the department of Mass Communication said the orientation was an eye opener. 'With this programme, I have known the rules and regulations of the school. And it is now behoves on me to abide by them because where there is no law, there is no sin', he said. Olufemi Felix, 100-Level Microbiology said: 'I am better equipped now. Have been exposed to the dos and don't of the university, and God will help me to live by them'. The event was rounded off Last Wednesday with guided to Idanre hill.
